Photographer and author Guadalupe Laiz has just published her much-anticipated second edition of In the Land of Fire & Ice: Horses of Iceland, a 360-page visual odyssey that captures the Icelandic horse in its dramatic natural setting.
Laiz’s first edition has long been sold out worldwide, and she has spent the past five years quietly crafting this expanded version, combining her earlier favorites with her latest work from 2019 to 2024.

From glaciers and active volcanoes to black sand beaches and basalt cliffs, the book showcases Iceland’s most iconic landscapes as the backdrop for the resilient and poetic Icelandic horse.

Adding a deeper cultural layer, Horses of Iceland's project manager, Berglind Margo Þorvaldsdóttir, contributes several insightful pages on the longstanding relationship between the Icelandic horse and Icelandic people. In her essay, she explores how these animals have shaped Icelandic identity, tradition, and daily life across centuries—arguing that their bond is more than practical or symbolic, but rooted in shared survival, mythology, and cultural memory.

In addition to Laiz’s own photography, the book features several striking images by Icelandic photographer

Þráinn Kolbeinsson

, known for his expertise in outdoor, landscape, and travel photography.

His contribution adds a local visual voice, complementing Laiz’s perspective and underscoring the elemental connection between the land, its people, and its horses.

This new edition offers readers not just striking photography, but also a narrative of connection: between land and beast, past and present, nature and nation. It is now available through Laiz’s official site and select international distributors.

In the Land of Fire & Ice: Horses of Iceland is available now.
